Description
Ammannia Gracilis, also known as Large Ammannia, Red Ammannia, or Pink Ammannia, is a stunning stem plant that has been popular among aquarists for years. Often mislabeled as Nesaea crassicaulis in trade, true Ammannia crassicaulis is a similar species that turns yellowish-green to reddish under water but is no longer commonly farmed as an aquarium plant.
Here at Aquarium Plants Factory, we cultivate Ammannia Gracilis emerged. When grown emerged, the leaves are green, but they change to a vibrant red color when adapted to submerged life.
Key Features:
-
Vibrant Colors: Ammannia Gracilis is renowned for its brilliant red and pink hues, which are particularly vibrant under high lighting conditions. When grown emersed, its leaves are green, but they transform to a rich red when submerged.
-
-
Distinctive Leaves: This plant has thin, elongated leaves that grow up to 12 cm long underwater. The leaves are brown-red on top and violet underneath, adding to its unique appearance.
-
Optimal Growing Conditions:
-
Lighting: Requires high lighting to achieve its vibrant colors. Medium lighting may result in a more yellow or greenish appearance.
-
-
CO2 and Nutrients: While CO2 supplementation is not mandatory, it is highly recommended for optimal growth and coloration. Regular fertilization with macro and micronutrients supports its rapid growth.
-
-
Water Parameters: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH range of 5.0-7.5. Ideal water temperatures are between 72-82°F (22-28°C). It enjoys temperatures over 24°C but can tolerate up to 32°C.
-
-
Soft Water: Rather soft water is beneficial, though it can also thrive in medium-hard water with CO2 supplementation.
-
Planting and Propagation:
-
Substrate: Plant in a nutrient-rich substrate to ensure robust growth. Ammannia Gracilis thrives best when spaced about 2 inches apart to allow for proper light penetration.
-
-
Propagation: Easily propagated through stem cuttings. Cut healthy stems and replant them in the substrate. This plant is also propagated by stem-tip and side-shoot cuttings.
-
Care and Maintenance:
-
Pruning: Regular trimming is essential to prevent the plant from overshadowing other species in the aquarium. Trim the plant when it reaches 4-6 inches below the water surface to encourage bushier growth.
-
-
Water Flow: Avoid high water flow areas as Ammannia Gracilis prefers still or slow-moving water environments.
-
Benefits:
-
Aesthetic Appeal: The vibrant colors and unique growth pattern of Ammannia Gracilis make it an excellent focal point or background plant in aquascapes. It looks best as a group in the middle of larger aquariums and works nicely for plant streets in Dutch-style tanks.
-
-
Easy Care: Despite its requirement for high lighting and CO2, it is relatively easy to care for with the right setup, making it suitable for both novice and experienced aquarists.
-
Conclusion:
Elevate your aquarium with the stunning Ammannia Gracilis. Its vibrant red and pink colors, combined with its graceful growth pattern, make it a must-have for any aquascape enthusiast. With proper care and maintenance, Ammannia Gracilis will transform your aquarium into a vivid underwater paradise.
